#BlackDisney

The #BlackDisney Photo Series Project was created as a proverbial middle finger to both bigotry and racism. It seeks to create space for imagination and representation to become intertwined.

In July of 2019 , during the hype of the #BlackAriel "controversy"this project was created by San Diego Native and renowned designer Sierra Mitchell and Non-Binary Drag Activist Amber St. James  as a way of re-imagining the many beloved Disney characters we have come to love, BUT with a twist as they would all be re-imagined as black drag queen activist Amber St.James, with a contemporary African len. This was in an effort to not only illustrate the struggle for representation that folxs of marginalized identities have fought since birth, but to also create a counter narrative to the stories that historically writes them out of these cherished childhood stories of triumphant, love, friendship, and adventure. This project seeks to create both that space and that narrative for them to finally feel seen and heard.
